Matthew Merwin - Illium

Matthew Merwin developed a fascination with Didgeridoo, an ancient Australian woodwind made from logs naturally hollowed by termites. These instruments were difficult to find in the United States so Merwin began making his own instruments, with his own unique variations.  His work has evolved into the design and creation of wood sculptures.  He uses many of the same techniques used in creating the Didgeridoo.

Born and raised in Bucks County, Merwin spent most of his adult life in the Pacific Northwest.  He returned to New Hope in 2009 and, with the support of other local artists and scultpors, concentrates on developing and perfecting his craft.

This sculpture was retired in 2016.
